If you want to lose weight ( burn fat ) you need to be in a caloric deficit. There are two main ways to create a caloric deficit.

The first way is to eat less calories than your body requires to maintain your current weight. For example if you want to lose approximately 2.2 pounds of fat you would need a weekly caloric deficit of 3,500 calories. If you wanted lose approximately 1 kg of fat you would need a caloric deficit of 7,700 calories per week. 

The second way to lose fat is to create a caloric deficit through exercise. Exercise helps you expend energy or calories. Let's say you burn 2,000 calories in a HIIT session and throughout the day and you only eat 1,500 calories you have created a caloric deficit of 500 calories.
